And Replacing Betsy DeVos is a GREAT Idea!
Elizabeth Warren continues to make waves as by far the best 2020 Presidential Candidate on Student Loans, adding to her previous promises to radically reduce (nearly eliminating) all outstanding student loan debt and initiating significant reforms to the borrowing and repayment processes with a new promise that in my opinion, is far more reasonable and likely to be achieved should she be elected President: getting rid of Betsy DeVos.
If you’ve been following my Blog, you’ll know that I am no fan of our current Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos, who was installed by President Trump, and who has been roundly (and rightly) criticized for cozying up to for-profit colleges and universities, student loan debt collection agencies, and student loan servicing companies that have stomped all over the rights of ordinary American borrowers, inflating one of the biggest debt bubbles the country has ever experienced; the $1.5 TRILLION Student Loan Debt Crisis we currently face.
Fortunately, Senator Elizabeth Warren is not at all afraid of angering the ruling financial class and has really gone for the jugular in recent weeks, announcing her radical plans to reduce and reform existing student loan debt, as well as today’s announcement that she will immediately get rid of Betsy DeVos and replace her with someone who actually deserves to lead the Department of Education.
Allow me to let Elizabeth Warren speak for herself;
I’ll just be blunt: Betsy DeVos is the worst Secretary of Education we’ve seen”
I agree completely with Senator Warren’s statement on Betsy DeVos, and I think getting rid of her would clear the single-largest hurdle anyone struggling under excessive student debt currently faces, especially as Ms. DeVos is the reason why excellent Federal Student Loan Forgiveness Programs like the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program continues to reject over 90% of qualified applicants, why the Borrower’s Defense to Repayment Program has effectively halted issuing any approvals of invalid debt discharges, and why the debt servicing and debt collection companies continue to operate well beyond the bounds of morality in their collections processes.
Elizabeth Warren’s Promise for the Department of Education
Senator Warren promised that she will put a person in charge of the Department of Education who has “real teaching experience… who understands how low pay, tattered textbooks, and crumbling classrooms hurt student sand educators”, which stands in stark contrast to someone like Secretary DeVos, who is essentially part of the modern gilded class.
This is honestly something that everyone should be paying attention to, especially those of us with student debt, or who care about student debt, because it’s likely to end up being a massive rallying cry on the campaign trail, and especially among younger voters, who are notoriously difficult to get to the polls.
I will admit that Senator Warren is not my first pick for President, but I have a lot of admiration for her courage in calling out a wolf in sheep’s clothing like Betsy DeVos, especially with rhetoric as strong as:
[Secretary DeVos] and her team are up to their eyeballs in conflicts of interest. Instead of championing our students, they protect for-profit colleges that break the law and cheat them.”
While I’ve been saying this for years right here on Forget Student Loan Debt, I also realize that I’m just one of many millions of voices who are screaming into the void, but when I hear similar words being spoken by someone like Senator Warren, helping give more bite to the bark of the little people like me who’ve been watching this tragedy unfold since President Trump first installed Secretary DeVos, I’m extremely pleased to feel like someone with a voice and a platform is using it to get an important message in front of the American people.
But Before We Debate the Fine Details of Senator Warren’s Plans…
Let me fill you in on one important piece of advice – even if Elizabeth Warren wins the Presidency in 2020 and gets elected, then is given the mandate to do whatever she wants with student loans, her relief programs are going to take years to go into effect.
I would highly advise against sitting around, waiting for her to get elected and save the day for your debt, as a better idea would be to start dealing with it head-on, right now.
If you’re truly struggling with student debt, then you should also consider paying a Student Loan Debt Relief Agency for help. Why? Because the people working at these companies deal with student loans all day, every day, and they’re your best chance at figuring out how to get your loans back under control.
I’ve interviewed all sorts of debt relief agencies over the past 10 years, talking to all sorts of so-called “experts”, and I can tell you that in all honesty I’ve only found two companies I trust to offer actual financial relief to people struggling with student loans.
For help with FEDERAL Student Loans: Call the Student Loan Relief Helpline at 1-888-906-3065. They will review your case, evaluate your options for switching repayment plans, consolidating your loans, or pursuing forgiveness benefits, then set you up to get rid of the debt as quickly as possible.
For help with PRIVATE Student Loans: Call McCarthy Law PLC at 1-877-317-0455. They will negotiate with your lender to settle your private loans for much less than you owe, then get you a new loan for the much lower, settled amount. NOTE: McCarthy Law can ONLY help with Private student loans.
If you do decide to call one of these companies and you have a bad experience with either of them, PLEASE make sure to come back and let me know about it in the Comments!
So, Should I Vote for Senator Warren?
Honestly, it’s a little too early for that anyway, but you may want to start thinking about who would best reflect your views on student loans, especially if they’re causing you serious financial trouble.
And while I’m not going to argue that student loan debt is THE single most important issue that our country faces in the 2020 election, or that anyone should vote for a candidate simply because of their views or platform on student loans, I do think it should at least be part of the calculus that goes into choosing who to support.
I also don’t want to turn this website into some sort of political machine for any given candidate, but I do have to point out that thus far, Senator Warren’s proposal and plans calling for “big structural change” to the student debt system are light-years ahead of what anyone else is even discussing.
The likelihood of Senator Warren actually being able to pass everything she’s proposed thus far remains pretty slim, but at least in starting these discussions, I’m starting to feel like there is a light at the end of the tunnel for those of us absolutely buried in excessive student loans.
And, in my opinion, this is an especially important issue to those Americans who have been left hung out to dry waiting for Government benefits packages like the Non-Profit Loan Forgiveness Program or the Government Employee Loan Forgiveness Program to kick in and start cancelling repaid loans, which was promised by President Obama’s student loan reforms, but which have been blocked by Betsy DeVos’s Education Department for several years now.
